observer-logo-small

For the first time in recent history, Plum Island will be open for tours during the Door County Lighthouse Walk on June 12-13, 2010.

Plum-Island_historical Limited to 13 people per excursion, three-hour tours will depart the Shoreline Charters dock in Gills Rock. The Friends of Plum & Pilot Islands (FOPPI) will lead guided tours of the historic U.S. Lifesaving Station and the lighthouse. Only four tours are being allowed on the island (two each day, weather permitting).

The trip is offered in cooperation with Shoreline Charters, the Door County Maritime Museum (DCMM), FOPPI, and the USFWS. Cost of the trip is $55. Visit www.dcmm.org to sign up. Tickets go on sale April 1. (Members of the DCMM may begin to purchase tickets on March 15.)

Thank Plum-Islandyou to the Fish and Wildlife Service for allowing public access to the island.

Plum Island’s buildings are sorely in need of restoration; the accompanying photos show the island in its heyday as a working lighthouse, contrasted with the recent state of the buildings, which have fallen into disrepair.
