Island Musicians
Perhaps because of its very remoteness, and thus a lack of the usual distractions, Washington Island is rife with both musicians and musical events. Musicians like Dan Hansen, Julian Hagen, Peter Nehlsen, Laura Findlay Hagen — in fact, the entire Hagen clan — fill the Island’s small performance spaces with song. Come to the Island and hear them out, at Fiddler’s Green (an ‘authentic’ Irish pub), the Red Barn (the grand-daddy of Island venues), and Trueblood Performing Arts Center (a state-of-the-art facility). Finally, if you can, visit the Island in August, when the Island Music Festival occurs, two weeks of world-class music led by Artistic Director Stephen Colburn, principal oboist with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.
