WASHINGTON ISLAND, WI, January 28, 2010 – For those who attended the Hansen Family Sing at Trinity over New Year’s weekend, going into the cold night with a warmed heart and the spirit of Christmas lingering a while longer was a gift.

The Hansen family has a long tradition of sing-a-longs, talent shows and skits. Harmony is their way of life — they believe that if you have a gift, it’s an obligation to share it. Aunt Barbara and Uncle Ray have taken this motto and instilled it in their children, grandchildren and now great-grandchildren.
Nativity, the best Christmas album of all time, and one of Jens’ dreams, birthed this latest concert. It was the perfect length, ranged from old to new, spiritual by nature, and featured hymns of old and new original tunes. Aunt Barbara skillfully played the piano with her lyrical approach. Dan directed and sang, stacking harmonies and reminding everyone to smile. Jens, Paula, Rich and Celia kept everyone grounded and helped keep the littler choir members in time. Solos by grandchildren Oliver, Kerrie, Con, Trisha, Annabelle and Garrett ensued. Duets and quartets were sprinkled throughout, and Doug anchored it all with a passage from Luke and the story of Silent Night.
The blending of family voices has an easy-sounding result that’s not lost on an audience. Hearing the tone of a parent, aunt, uncle or even grandparent in a young person’s voice is such a rare treat, and one we were given the pleasure of hearing over and over again. As a bonus, Mike’s voice and presence was also felt. It was a profound way to honor a loved one, and although not stated out loud, was clearly part of the intent.
So, thank you for reminding us all of the real meaning of Christmas and for starting 2010 off with a sense of renewal and family. As Charlie would say, I’m proud of you.
