Celebrating Winter 2010 – Snowflake Style!

What do a pig, chili, ableskievers and fish have in common? Celebrating Winter 2010: Snowflake Style! This year’s February calendar is filled with events to take the chill out  and put fun, friends and food into the winter with some old favorites and new twists.

Starting Saturday, February 6th, anglers will be hoping to make a prize-winning catch for the Lion’s Club Fish Derby. Prizes to be awarded at Nelsen’s Hall at Noon on Sunday February 14th. Stay for the Lions Club Lunch and Bingo. The W.I. Schools Student Council Bake Sale is on hand to take care of your sweet tooth. Check with the Lion’s Club for the Derby contest rules.

The Ice/Snow Sculpture Contest is back. Stay home and make some art: chisel it, scoop it, pack it, color it and present your creation to the masses. Register the location of your creation with Kim Hansen or Mary Andersen. Voting ballots will be available at Mann’s Store, Hansen’s BP Amoco, Mann’s Mercantile and the Red Cup Coffee Shop.

If ice fishing isn’t your thing, grab your favorite photos and enter the Island Photo Contest by choosing one or all the subject categories in this year’s contest: Landscape/Scenery, People, or Wildlife (limit two photos per category/per person). Sign up at the Ferry Office where your entries will be displayed all week. Cash prizes to be awarded for each category at Nelsen’s Hall on Sunday February 14th.


On Friday, February 12, Bethel Builders hosts their annual Ableskievers Dinner at Bethel Church from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to come out, warm up and enjoy this tasty meal. Visit with old friends, make some new ones, and have a great time!

Saturday, February 13th is time to get the slow cooker ready and break out your special blend of spices and ingredients for the Chamber’s Annual Chili Cook Off. This year’s event is hosted by, KK FISKE/The Granary from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Cash prize awards. Live Band Saturday evening February 13th.

Enjoy a succulent roasted pig dinner with all the trimmings on Saturday, February 13th at Karly’s Bar & Cellar Restaurant, starting at 5 pm, a mouth-watering, taste bud-pleasing new offering to this year’s celebration.

Don’t forget the specialty meals at local restaurants all week long.
