Washington Island Music Festival

Every year in August, Washington Island welcomes its Music Festival, a series of concerts led by Artistic Director Stephen Colburn, principal oboist of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. World-class musicians donate their talents to the Festival, spending two weeks living and performing on the Island and establishing strong ties to the community.
Sponsored by the Washington Island Art & Nature Center, the Festival’s events are now the heart of the Island’s summer music schedule. A growing outreach program complements the chamber music concerts, open rehearsals and lectures, and children’s programs in the Island’s beautiful performing arts center.
The Music Festival depends on the effort of many people: dedicated volunteers, local businesses, granting agencies, and, of course, the music lovers who attend concerts. Many individual donors respond generously to the annual fund drive, our largest source of funding, and to the Memorial Day Benefit – a buffet dinner, concert, and a combination silent and live auction.
The 2012 Washington Island Music Festival’s kicks off with it’s 1st Program on Monday, Aug. 6 at the Trueblood Performing Arts Center. This first program includes Bach’s Sextet in C Major, Rasmussen’s Quintet in F Major, pieces by Carl Nielsen, and Ernest Bloch’s Piano Quintet No. 1 for Piano and Strings. A pre-concert talk begins at 7pm, and a reception follows the performance. The festival continues with works by Ferenc Farkas, Frank Proto, as well as Brahms, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Pavel Haas, Hadyn and more!
Most events will be held in the Trueblood Performing Arts Center unless otherwise noted (see the full schedule for details). A few Open Rehearsals are available to attend at no charge and donations are accepted for any of the Lectures/Discussions and the Children’s Concert. The annual Under the Big Top concert tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for Students under 18. Other concerts are just $15, with Students under 18 still just $6, and there is No Charge for Children under 12 when accompanied by parent or guardian.
Program No. 6 offers a unique experience to kids: The Children’s Summer Music Camp, which will be held at Bethel Church from 9-11, August 13-17. All children ages 6-12 are encouraged to attend. Kari Gordon will once again be our director. She will lead the children in various aspects of music appreciation, styles, composers, rhythms, with an emphasis on choral music.
This year the camp participants will perform “Children’s Chorus” from the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet at the Music Festival Children’s Concert on August 15th. Registration is FREE to all children, though Advance Registration is required due to limited enrollment. Call 920.847.3434.
Program No. 7, Family Harmony, on August 14th at 10am, will feature Music Festival Artists Scott Tisdel and Stefanie Jacob who will be joined by their talented violinist daughter, Emmy Tisdel, in an exploration of music and family. They will discuss and share their experiences as professional musicians and teachers and how that may effect the family dynamic, education, music study and the many choices and decisions parents and their musically inclined children will make. The artists will offer a generous selection of solo, duo, and trio repertoire with opportunity for questions and feedback from the audience.
An annual tradition, Washington Island Music Festival is proud to present “Under the Big Top” on August 16th at 7:30pm. An evening of fun, music, monologues and humor, featuring Island talent, whether year-round, seasonal, or “here on vacation.” Julian Hagen has co-ordinated Under the Big Top since 1996, working over the years with favorite Island emcees Cindra Hokkanen, Jay Hagen and Dan Baker to line up performers, organize the program and run the show. Tonight join Julian and Cindra and fellow performers for an enjoyable open-air concert that will entertain you from the first number to the last, when we say “Good night” by joining together to sing Julian’s Island anthem, “Northern Lights.”
